In the Nation we don’t really celebrate NOTHING but SAVIOUR’S DAY.
We have HOLY TUESDAY – EVERY TUESDAY – which is TOTALLY AWES!!!
I had a Karamu in the nineties and attended one or two when it was really pop! π
I read a lot of Y.A……. π
I also sat at the feet of the founder – Doctor Maulana Karenga – at my Alma Mater, THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY AT LONG BEACH, where he is The Chairman of THE DEPARTMENT OF BLACK STUDIES.
We had SEVERAL KARAMUS…
Now that I am Muslim idk how I feel about it.
I mean Our Beloved Messenger (saws) would probably categorize it with NEGRO HISTORY WEEK. iow USELESS and INSUFFICIENT.
Even if you try to justify it as a reason to get together with loved ones and celebrate our cultural richness it is useless because ISLAM is absent which probably explains its short life.
Get together at least once a week on the third day.

I read a book about AFRICAN RITES OF PASSAGE and it spoke of a ritual wherein every few years or so, the Seniors and the Toddlers would line up facing each other.
Then they would run towards each other and the Toddlers would try to knock down a specific senior.
If he/she succeeded then that Senior would become his/her mentor… π
