I don’t know why I thought I was going to starve to death in New Orleans. In retrospect, it’s funny but at the time, I thought I HAD to eat at a restaurant, however, there is a serious deficit of healthy options there, at least at that time. Since then, there have been advances in options for the particular eater.
I found three restaurants that were suitable to my discriminate pallete.
My favorite by far was LEBANON CAFE. Repeatedly voted Number One Restaurant, year after year, for their HALAL and healthy menu. I was lucky because I lived within walking distance and was able to enjoy my favorite dish: the VEGETABLE PLATE WITH WHITE CHEESE AND BASMATI RICE regularly! لذيذان It’s on the St. Charles line.
My second favorite was a little spot called CLIO’s. Last time I was there, they had just moved to The Nile. (smile) My favorite dish there was Baba Ghanoush and a “fried” Eggplant Dish that was served garnished with pomegranate when you eat in. So, I definitely recommend dining in. I’m pretty sure they have tablecloths. 🙂 Also, ask for the WHEAT bread. They have it but it’s not on the menu.
When you’re visiting Magazine Street, there’s a place inside The Jetgo gas station that serves Our Islamic menu. I can’t remember the address. Just look for a gas station on the left side of the street traveling AWAY from the Quarter. It’s called WWW.SHAWARMAONTHEGO.COM
Mona’s is also on Magazine. Be sure to try the LEBANESE TEA. It has ROSES in it! She has another location but Ima let you find it. 😉
Another one is kind of like a buffet, similar to HALAL GUYS (which is another new establishment I have yet to try), it is called some kind of Cafe, but it is located across the street from LSU on Tulane/Galvez.
I guess there are more options than I originally recalled. Al Hamdulillah!
Here in Los Angeles, I am able to cook, so I don’t eat out unless, I just want that experience. Or I want to learn new dishes.
I used to patronize SALAAM WEST. The Nation’s spot. I saw Skee-Lo there. His soup was BOMB! And he used to serve this toast grilled in herb-seasoned butter that was delish! He may have moved because a Brother told me (you know our stuff is word of mouth) about another spot but this is the INTERNET, so if you wanna know where, leave a comment. No one will see it because I have to approve them. You can get BEAN PIE there!!!
But Allah Blessed me with another spot. Rita’s. She’s Bangladeshi but claims ISLAM. Heavy Hindu influence there though. But Allah is her judge, she says she is a Muslim, so I treat her as one. Hakim and I dine there regularly. She even came out to greet us, after about the fifth visit. It is improper for Muslim Sisters to come out into the public, as Our Beloved Messenger (May the Peace and the Blessings of Allah forever be upon him) taught us of his visit to the Muslim World.
He related to us how he visited MANY homes and never once saw the females. Meals were served by the young Brothers and discussions were held without the presence or even appearance of any of the female members of their family.
This knowledge completely changed my expectation of how I command to be treated by Brothers.
Sisters, do not let them “pimp” you. When you court, be sure to agree that after your get married, you will QUIT YOUR JOB. Let your husband be a HUSBAND and protect and provide for you, which is the definition of HUSBAND. Learn how to live on his income. I will give you this secret. YOU SAVE MONEY IN YOUR KITCHEN.

Rita’s is where I realized the common sense of Black Table Cloths. I won’t eat at a restaurant without tablecloths. After our meal, I instructed Hakim to begin to clear our dishes and clean up, as Muslims ALWAYS LEAVE A PLACE CLEANER THAN WE FOUND IT, and I realized the practicality of black tablecloths.
Living in New Orleans, where food is one of the biggest industries along with music, I discovered that the cost of cleaning tablecloths is the reason many restaurants opt to forgo them. But by using black, stains are imperceptible and are just overall easier to maintain.
In conclusion, simple tablecloths level up your restaurant from being just a “nice” restaurant to a “FINE DINING” experience.
