As-Salaam Alaikum!

It is Spring again and the Yazmeen (Jasmine) is in full bloom.

Yazmeen is my favorite kind of tea and I have spent hundreds of dollars on pre-packaged Yazmeen tea bags.

The best can be found at The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. I like to make a chai with honey, milk, cardamom, nutmeg and almond extract. So good! The Coffee Bean And Tea Leaf in my neighborhood is closed due to Corona but on my walks around town I have discovered some Yazmeen plants that I have put in my water bottles and have been blessed to partake of Yazmeen Water.

It is deliciousness!

There are different types of Yazmeen. I have tried the white blossoms with a little pink that grow on a vine type of plant as well as the yellow blossoms that grow on a bush or tree.

Just keep your nose open and when you get a whiff of Yazmeen follow it until you locate the plant.

ED42ACC3-17E1-4A25-9A6A-C09194F64CD5

The yellow are more fragrant and yield a better taste than the white but if you only have access to the white you can still enjoy that awesome Yazmeen flavor.

If you have the wherewithal, try it in ice cream and smoothies!

As Salaam Alaikum!

Artichoke Gratinata

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

As-Salaam ‘Alaikum Beloved Asiatic Black Queens and Kings!

I saw this recipe on my shopping bag and it sounds really delicious. If you have never tried artichoke hearts they are sumptuous. I have only had them in salads but this is a dish that features them.

I Googled the recipe and found some pictures. It looks sorta like a casserole/stuffing because of the bread crumbs. Anytime you hear gratin know that there are bread crumbs. It’s probably French for grated.

I am unable to upload a picture but you can Google it.

INGREDIENTS

3 T olive oil

1 garlic clove minced

1 lb. frozen artichoke hearts thawed

2 T chopped fresh parsley leaves

3/4 t salt

1/3 t freshly ground black pepper

1/8 t red pepper flakes

1/2 c chicken broth

1/4 c Marsala wine

2 T butter

1/3 c plain bread crumbs

1/3 c grated Parmesan

DIRECTIONS

Warm the olive oil in a heavy bottom skillet over medium high heat

Add the garlic and cook for one minute

Add the artichoke hearts, parsley, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes

Cook until artichoke hearts start to brown at the edges, about three minutes

Add the chicken broth and wine and simmer for three minutes.

Transfer the artichoke mixture to a 2 quart baking dish

Bake uncovered in a moderate oven until top becomes crisp about ten minutes

Note: The last step is not in the original recipe but seems to make sense.

I haven’t tested this recipe so send me a comment letting me know how you like it.

HOW TO HARVEST YOUR OWN WHEAT

بِسْــــــــــــــــــمِ اﷲِالرَّحْمَنِ اارَّحِيم

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum Dearly Beloved Sisters & Brothers 😉

Growing up, I used to always get hurt and annoyed by those little brown things that would get stuck in my socks and stick me on my ankles. Well, I recently found out that those annoying little buggers are wheat granules! Wheat grows wild like crazy out here in L.A.

Growing our own food, canning and other means of becoming self-sufficient are areas in which we should be masters, so I checked out a book from the library a while back and it illustrated the means of harvesting wheat and it is very simple.

Our Beloved Messenger (PBUH) taught us that whole wheat makes the best bread. So, I thought I would share this tut from YT with my Beloved Asiatic Family. You can use a coffee grinder to grind the wheat into flour. Enjoy! And, leave a comment and let me know how you went about the process and how well it turned out for you! 😀

ICE CREAM W/O AN ICE CREAM MAKER

بِسْــــــــــــــــــمِ اﷲِالرَّحْمَنِ اارَّحِيم

BANANA ICE CREAM

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum Sweet Asiatic Black Sisters!!!

Whenever you see another Black woman, you are looking at your Sister.
Greet Her!

Guess what I found out quite by accident? You don’t have to have an ice cream maker to make your own ice cream!

My Wali brought me some bananas after I asked him what kind of ice cream he wanted. I had never even considered making banana ice cream before so, needless to say, I was very excited!

Any homemade ice cream made from fruit has pretty much the same recipe.

2 cups sweetened fruit
2 cups heavy whipping cream

Fresh fruit is always better. I use 1/2 cup of honey and 1 3/4 cups fruit. If you want more than a quart, just increase your measurements equally.

Unfortunately, I was so excited about the bananas that I went overboard. I put in cocoa (thinking chocolate covered bananas :/ ), vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg.

It was too much.

I also used a little milk because the recipes that came with my ice cream maker all said to use a little milk – about 1 1/2 cups cream and 1/2 cup milk. But I knew from experience that it always comes out better when I used nothing but cream.

Anyway, the power went out while I was making the ice cream. And I had to just put it in the freezer. It came alright. It had little ice chips in it because of the milk though. :/

So, anyway, yesterday, my Wali took me to the market and chose some more bananas. I used to buy them for my son, but I stopped liking them several years ago – after years of growing up with a Chiquita sticker always on my forehead. 😉

THIS TIME, I missed it with the cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, and just used 3 bananas, about 3/4 cup of honey and filled my quart measuring cup with cream. Past the marker. Almost to the rim.

As I was preparing to hook up my ice cream maker Allah Said, “Don’t use it. Just put it in the freezer.”

I disagreed and hesitated. Astaghfirullah But did it anyway.

ALLAHU AKBAR!!!

It came out so fresh and creamy! No ice chips or anything. I couldn’t believe it!

Anybody can make homemade ice cream! All you need are the ingredients, a bowl and a freezer.

Stop buying that ready-made ice cream and giving the manufacturers your money for something you can make yourself. Don’t be lazy.

BARBECUED SALMON, PARMESAN & MUSHROOM BURGERS

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum Beautiful Beloved Black Sisters!

My son, Hakim, has been known for his creative and often problem-solving solutions since he was very, very little (as young as three-years-old). So, once upon a time he came up with the brilliant idea of making a Salmon Burger. Before I knew that “Soy beans are only good for shortening your life,” we used to eat Soy Burgers. But after I read HOW TO EAT TO LIVE, I stopped buying them. And he really missed them.

So, together we came up with the idea to add mushrooms, Parmesan slices, sauteed onions and lettuce. Initially, I used to add a Garlic Sauce, but found that it doesn’t really need it.

Today, I barbecued the Salmon, but you can also broil it, bake or sauté it. Also, I don’t use store-bought barbecue sauce. I don’t know what all that stuff is that they put in it. All sorts of artificial colors and flavorings (slow-death) added, preservatives as well. So, until I am inclined to learn how to make my own sauce, I just marinate and grill.

Toast the bread with a little butter on top of the stove or grill (the edges) and sauté or grill the onions. If you are using sliced mushrooms, sauté the mushrooms in butter. I tried something different today. Instead of sliced mushrooms, I used portobello and I grilled them as well. Many people prepare burgers using only the portobello, but with the Salmon, it was very, very good.

I also forgot to buy the Parmesan when I went to the market yesterday, but although my son was disappointed when I told him, It doesn’t really need the Parmesan either. I don’t taste it. But my son says he does and he noticed the difference. It was juicy and delicious with just the Salmon, mushroom, grilled onions and lettuce. But if you want the cheese, just put some slices on top of the Salmon after it’s been cooked and put it in a moderate oven (about 300°F)

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum Sisters!!!

Our Beloved Messenger, The Most Honorable and Humble Elijah Muhammad (May the Peace and the Blessings of Allah Forever Be Upon Him) taught us that a vegetarian diet is ideal for human beings, although we can eat fish. Fish is from a different world of life. Fish is born and fish lives in the water of life. Fish is good for us. (HOW TO EAT TO LIVE). However, we must be careful when selecting fish for our meals, confining our fish eating to those fish weighing between one and ten pounds.

When it comes to Salmon, there are many different varieties that vary in weight depending on the species. According to the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, Pink Salmon weighs the least of all varieties, averaging 3.5 – 4.0 lbs. So this would, obviously, be our ideal choice. Our Beloved Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him) recommended that we eat the smallest fish as possible.

There are other varieties of Salmon averaging less than ten pounds as well, however. Alaska Sockeye (Red) Salmon averages five lbs. and Alaska Keta Salmon averages eight lbs.

The species you want to avoid are Alaska Coho (Silver) Salmon which averages twelve lbs. and the largest breed, Alaska King Salmon, which averages 20 lbs.!

When dining out, be sure to inquire as to the breed of Salmon before ordering as King Salmon is the Salmon of choice for most upscale restaurants.

BEST WAY TO SELECT SWEET & JUICY FRUIT – Smell. Squeeze. Inspect. Ask Allah. Select.

Fresh_Fruit

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum Beautiful and Health-Conscious Black Sisters!

I know Summer is nearly over, but I went to the store the other day and walked past some cantaloupe that smelled so good, that I couldn’t just walk past and NOT buy any. And I had not even planned on buying ANY fruit, but I’ve learned that if you walk past a fruit and the smell just pops out at you – BUY IT!!!

I GUARANTEE you are not going to be disappointed.

You always want to select the sweetest, juiciest and most flavorful of all the fruit that are being offered, so as with anything else, before you make your final selection, Ask Allah!

I have learned that it is always BEST to seek Allah’s Guidance in EVERY STEP YOU TAKE. If you take the wrong step, you will have strayed from The Path of Allah and everything you do after it will be wrong. But All Praises Are Due To Allah! All You Have To Do Is Say “Astagfirullah” (“Allah Forgive Me.”) And you can continue back on the Right Path.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if EVERYONE sought Allah’s Guidance in everything we do?

We would all live in UNITY and HARMONY and PEACE in submission to the Will of Allah. This is the NATURE of the Black Nation and ALL of Allah’s Creations, but we have an enemy that was NOT Created by The God of the Nation and they have made mischief and caused bloodshed the entire duration of their time on our Planet. I am referring to the white devil Caucasian race.

Allah is going to destroy them so that we can once again live in peace and harmony, but if we want to survive the destruction we must be one who submits to the Will of Allah. And we must begin now – before the destruction comes – to show that we are qualified to live in the next life. We have to prove our worthiness here and now – in this life.

pineapple

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad (May the Peace and the Blessings of Allah Forever Be Upon Him) Taught Us In How To Eat To Live that:

“Fruit is good for us. We should eat plenty fruits.”

****

Here are some useful tips when selecting fruit.

#1 RULE – SMELL IT

If you smell it when you walk into the produce section – BUY IT!

I would say, even when you walk past it, if you smell it – BUY IT!

I always only buy the fruit that I smell. But if it is something that you just have to have:

SMELL IT – SQUEEZE IT – ASK ALLAH – SELECT IT.

WHOLE FRESH FRUIT

Whenever selecting fresh fruits and vegetables, don’t be afraid to LOOOOOOK. INSPECT EACH ONE METICULOUSLY BEFORE YOU PUT IT IN YOUR BAG. You know you are going to inspect it again before you eat it, and you don’t want any surprises. Check for signs of decay, bruises, soft spots and insect holes. If it is packaged and can be opened, open the package and inspect its contents fastidiously. Perfection is perfectly attainable if you refuse to settle for anything less.

watermelon

WATERMELON

Tap with four closed-fingers and listen for hollowness. If it sounds and feels like it’s empty on the inside – it’s good.

I’ll never forget returning from the farmer’s market, when my son, who was very little at the time, accidentally dropped a watermelon. And to my utter delight, it was YELLOW on the inside! I had never seen a yellow watermelon before and didn’t even know they existed. But according to Wisegeek, yellow and even white varieties of watermelon are even more ancient than the red! Watermelon are native to Africa. This explains why Black People in America are so fond of them.

oranges

Don’t be afraid to purchase fruit for your family, INSTEAD OF JUNK! Your children can only eat what you buy. Stay out of those aisles and SHOP THE “U”. Fill your refrigerator with fruits and seeds (The shelled kind are cleaner. Master Fard Muhammad, to Whom Praises are Due Forever, was eating sunflower seeds when I met HIM, so they are my snack of choice). Stop buying chips, cookies and NEVER EAT NUTS. Fruits are delicious, versatile AND all good. Feed your family foods that will give life and not take life away.

****

honeydew

CANTALOUPE, ORANGES, HONEYDEW AND ANY FRUIT WITH A “NAVEL”

Smell The Navel. If it emits a powerful smell, it’s good. The stronger the smell, the better the fruit. If you don’t smell anything, it’s probably not going to be any good. Keep looking. And always ask Allah.

If you’re interested, I had a friend who swore that honeydew are a well-kept beauty secret among devils. I haven’t tested this theory, but they taste good enough to try. 😉 If you are up to the challenge, comment and let us know what you find.

mangoesMANGOES

Mangoes are overwhelmingly the #1 choice fruit in the world. But you would be surprised to learn how many Black people have never tasted them. They are becoming more common among Black people, now that the street vendors are offering them. But if you want to purchase your own from the store, the first thing to look for before you even pick it up and squeeze it, is color. You want a fruit that is a combination of red and orange as in the picture. Honestly, I have never even seen a mango that looks like these pictured above. They usually have some green in them too. More like these:

mangoes real

I would pick up the two on the bottom left – the one in the center first. Feel its firmness, then remove the stem stub, if necessary, and smell the location where I just removed the stub.

When you squeeze it, you want it to yield but not feel so soft that it’s mushy. It should be firm but not hard. Visualize how it will react when you slice into it. Same thing with Kiwi. kiwi_sliceI remember when Kiwi first started gaining popularity. Everybody went crazy because of its aesthetic interior. As a result, it became the fruit of choice for fruit salads. But after buying them as an adult I realized, I don’t like them, so I stopped buying them, much to my son’s disappointment! He LOVED them. That’s when I learned that I can’t just buy what I like. I have to buy what he likes too. That was new to me. Sisters, learn your family’s preferences and buy the foods that they like too.

****

BANANA

Bananas depend on personal preference. Some people, like my grandmother, like them Black. I have found that the ones offered on the regular shelf are never ripe enough. The stores want you to buy them like that and make you wait for them to ripen when you get home. That’s greedy capitalism and not practical for us at all. You want to eat them when you get home! The good ones are the ones that have been marked down, they are usually the perfect ripeness. But because there is such a stigma attached to buying the “marked down” foods that I feel funny buying those. It looks like I can’t afford the regular priced ones. pffffff. Not after writing this. 😉

*A caution about bananas. If you eat too many they can cause constipation. I LOVED them as a child. I would eat them all day. I still remember putting the stickers on my forehead. LOL But I was always constipated. I didn’t think anything of it because I was young and children are not easily affected by things like that. I wasn’t, anyway. Not too long ago, my son asked me to make him some cooked carrots. I never liked them so I had never made them. But since he asked, I made them and he became constipated. So, I researched them and learned that both cooked carrots and bananas can cause constipation. So, eat them in moderation. And especially, if you are feeding them to your babies.

****

cherries

CHERRIES

Another one of my favorite fruits, and unfortunately the most expensive. I think cherries were the inspiration for the popular saying among Black People: “The Darker the Berry, the Sweeter the Juice.”  Pick the dark ones.

****

persimmons

PERSIMMONS

Delicious firm or soft, but I have never had one that wasn’t sweet.

****

strawberries

STRAWBERRIES

I never really cared for strawberries until I was in the hospital giving birth to my daughter. It was the last day in May and they gave me the BEST strawberries I had ever tasted. I made everybody who came to visit take one. They were absolutely delectable! Ever since then I’ve bought them every Summer and ALWAYS if I smell them.

****

Berries

BLUEBERRIES/BLACKBERRIES/RASPBERRIES

I don’t really like berries (except strawberries) unless I’m making something else and using them for added flavor. However, blueberries are my son’s favorite fruit. So, I buy them for him. I usually just let him taste one. But be cautious because it seems as if berries spoil faster than other fruits, so be sure and check for spoilage before you buy them.

****

apples

APPLES

So many different varieties! Apples are renown for their health benefits and since apple season is approaching, wisdom dictates taking advantage of their added nutrients!

applechartwashington

If you need help in deciding which kind you prefer at the moment, ask Allah for confirmation and then look for perfection. Smell each one and inspect them loooooking for any bruises, soft spots and insect holes. Always cut the skin off. It just tastes better. 😉

To get an idea and be better informed of the thousands of different varieties of apple, click here.

****

pears

PEARS

Next to apples, pears are probably the most variegated fruit you’ll find in the grocery store. I prefer the crunchiness of Bosc. But if your palette demands something soft and juicier, go with Bartlett. Smell. Squeeze. Inspect. Ask Allah. Select. I found this interesting article on the many different varieties of pears.

****

plums

PLUMS

Plums are another fruit that my son loves that I don’t care for. Different people have different preferences. Some people, like my son, prefer tangy/tart flavors. So, I buy plums for him. They also come in different varieties and can be good firm or soft. I used to squeeze and mash them almost, before I ate them to make them really soft. I always just ask Allah, when decided which ones to purchase – red or black – or whatnot. After that I just look for bruises and soft spots, always seeking perfection.

****

Pineapple-Main

PINEAPPLES

If you don’t smell them when you walk past, don’t buy them. Pineapples have a very strong smell. You should be able to smell them as soon as you enter the produce section. Look for a yellow hue. Smell the bottom. Remove the leaves before you buy, if it is being sold by the pound. This will bring the cost down. Pineapples are my favorite fruit (along with mangoes) so, I did a little additional research on them and found this:

“The two features to watch for when selecting a pineapple are ripeness and deterioration. Ripeness is indicated by a bright yellow/gold color on the skin that at the very least should be present on the eyes around the base of the fruit. Though industry literature states that a fully ripe pineapple may be entirely green, ”mature green,” it is also true that it may not be ripe.

“Buying a fully green pineapple is risky. The stem end of the fruit has the highest sugar content and is the ripest portion. The higher up that yellow color goes, the more evenly a pineapple will be flavored. That color, plus a pleasant, mild pineapple aroma at the base are the best guides to ripeness. The surface of the pineapple should be firm and gently yielding to the touch. The ability to pull a leaf from the crown proves nothing about ripeness, despite the enduring popularity of that myth.

“Deterioration is marked by a wrinkled skin, a cushiony softness and an aroma of fermentation that suggests vinegar or acetone. An overripe pineapple may be green or a reddish bronze color. Other negative signs are leakage, mold, cracks, gumminess or softness, and brown, withered leaves. All pineapple is sprayed with a fungicide that dries the leaves somewhat, but they should remain fairly green and bright.”

****

grapes

GRAPES

It is common enough and common sense enough to just open the bag and taste one. I know stores don’t like it, and I don’t like eating them without washing them, but one won’t hurt much, and I don’t care what the store employees nor the owners think because they are not the one who is going to be mad when I get home and taste them and find that they are sour. :/

As far as variety, I prefer Black grapes, but as long as they are sweet, that’s all that really matters. And if you really want a treat – FREEZE THEM. 😉

****

Autumn_Red_peaches

PEACHES

I prefer nectarines to peaches, but my son likes peaches. Again, always smell them. You should be able to smell them as soon as you enter the produce section. Firm or soft? Depends on your preference. But sometimes peaches can be soft and dry on the inside, which unfortunately, you won’t know until you bite into it.

****

nectarines

NECTARINES

I like nectarines that look just like this. They used to come really huge in the nineties. Now, I can’t find those big crunchy and juicy ones. They should be kind of bumpy and textured with spots, like the one on the far right. The harder the better. I used to LOVE biting into one of the big hard crunchy ones, but I fainted one day and fell and messed up my front tooth, so now I have to cut them. :/ It’s just not the same. 😦

****

lemon

LEMONS

The fruit I am never without, but still haven’t figured out how to pick. I am starting to feel for softness, because the juice is what you want, so they have to be squeezable. Skin thickness doesn’t really seem to be a factor in juiciness, neither size. But, since soda is not good for you and my son and I cannot agree on juice, I just buy lemons and make lemonade with honey, which we both love. We also eat a lot of fish and they are indispensable for seasoning fish.

HERE IS WHAT OUR BELOVED MESSENGER – THE HONORABLE ELIJAH MUHAMMAD (MAY THE PEACE AND THE BLESSINGS OF ALLAH FOREVER BE UPON HIM) WROTE CONCERNING FRUIT IN HOW TO EAT TO LIVE

“FRUITS – Fruits are all good and best for our consumption in their natural state. Fruits should never be cooked to get the better value out of them for our health. Fruits should be eaten raw and not cooked. The drying of fruits is only for preservation so that it can be eaten later but not with the value that it contained when it was fresh.”

HOW TO SET A FORMAL DINNER TABLE SETTING

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

PLACE SETTING

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum Dearly Beloved Asiatic Black Queens!!!!!!

I went to Dollar Tree last week and they had these elegant place mats and linen napkins, which I absolutely could not leave without, so as I was placing them on my Dining Room table, it occurred to me that I didn’t really know the proper way to set a table.

Thank Allah for YouTube!!!

This is really something that only a select few Black women are privileged enough to learn in their youth. I remember wanting to attend Charm School so badly!!! But, I never had the opportunity. I always wanted to be refined and cultured, clean, pure and holy all of my life, but just didn’t know how until I became a Muslim and accepted my own. Now, I can be myself, which is a Goddess.

Sisters, we are the paradigm of Righteous, Virtuous and Pious women for all women to admire and aspire to become. We must learn the proper way of civilization which has been denied to us by our slavemasters and their children.

We are lucky to be living in an era wherein anything we want to learn is right at our fingertips. I heard someone say that “Ignorance is a choice, nowadays.” It really is, because even those of us who do not have computers at home, can visit the Library, where it is free to anyone and everyone. There is no excuse for complacency.

This is just the first step in entertaining, Sisters. Let’s be ourselves, Sisters, And gain respect in the eyes of the civilized societies of the world and make our children THE BEST!

In Sha Allah, we’ll get to proper Dinner table etiquette later.

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum Beautiful and Beloved, HEALTHY-EATING Black Sisters!!! 😉

SQUAB BEST

Our Beloved Messenger, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad (May the Peace and the Blessings of Allah forever be upon him) taught us in the only book that correctly teaches us how to eat (HOW TO EAT TO LIVE, BOOK 2) that “No meat is good for you except that little, young pigeon that has never flown from its nest, called Squab. Squab is the only meat on the planet Earth that is fit for us to take as a food.

Truthfully, I had never even HEARD of Squab before reading this epic book. I thought it was just slang for “fight.” Feel me? LOL You probably didn’t know it was a food either (unless you are intelligent enough to have read this book). 🙂

But, I do know that rich white people eat it. Here is a picture of Squab from the “Titanic” menu.

SQUAB ROASTED TITANIC

I also wrote in my other post that they serve it at the million-dollar, super-exclusive, U.S. Presidents-are-members, Jonathan Club too. So, I thought, maybe I should give this distinguished meat a second look.

I mean, I knew the Messenger (PBUH) said it is the only meat that is okay for us to eat, but because I had never seen it, I just became a pescatarian and didn’t worry about it.

But for those of you who really like meat, I wanted to give you some reasons why you should choose Squab over any other type of meat.

Whenever I begin a blog, I always look for visuals FIRST. It gives me a better knowledge and puts me in the mood to write. I always want to SHOW and PROVE what I’m talking about and “A picture paints a thousand words.”

If I told you, “The Squab is ugly,” I would be making the understatement of the year. The Squab is hideous. However, I WAS able to find some pretty decent pictures.

SQUAB DIFFERENT

squab

squab okay

But I have to mention that the first pictures I saw were of whole squab roasted with the heads still attached to the rest of the body. IKR? It looked so gross. I’m getting nauseous just thinking about it. You can Google that yourself. I’m straight.

But I also found this cool book that was written in 1902!!!

SQUAB BOOK

“How to make a pigeon and squab business pay, details of building, buying, habits of birds, mating, watering, feeding, killing, cooling, marketing, shipping, curing ailments, etc.”

You can’t go wrong with old stuff. And Squab is definitely something old – in America, anyway. The Messenger (PBUH) taught us that when he went to Egypt, he saw TRUCKLOADS of Squab headed to the market for laymen and women to enjoy.

But, here in the good (and terrible) U. S. of A., they don’t eat it anymore. I’ve NEVER seen it in the stores. Most people have never even heard of it. AND I looked online to buy it and they cost about $20 for ONE!!!

I’m going to try it before I die, In Sha Allah, but I’ve been pescatarian too long to really crave land flesh enough to break off that kinda bread.

Anyway, here’s what I learned about the little Squab.

PERFECT PICTURE OF SQUAB

I think these are breeders because they look kinda old. I just posted it because the picture reads “perfect,” but true squab have never flown from the nest.

mamma-mourning-dove-with-her-two-squab-jay-milo

I think this is a little more accurate. The squab appear to be very small. The average size is about 12 ounces.

This description is from a website that sells them.

“Squab meat is dark meat, The Squab meat is very lean, easily digestible, and Squab is rich in proteins, minerals, and vitamins. Squab meat has silky texture, as it is very tender and fine-grained. It has a milder taste than other game animals and birds.

“Squab meats are succulent, tender, flavorsome and delicious.

“Squab are healthy low cholesterol, high protein, free range and natural.”

I edited it a little bit to keep it from sounding so commercial. I’m not advertising nothing unless I get a piece. Knawmean?

I’m going to buy The National Standard Squab Book, raise them (when Allah Blesses me to find some for sale) and offer them to my beautiful Black People when I open my restaurant. I know Allah will be pleased and BLESS me ABUNDANTLY. 🙂

Here is some more positive information about “Squabs” I found on a distributor’s website.

Squab, or young pigeon, has been bred for food for centuries dating back to early Asian and Arabic cultures. The chronicles of history place Squab high on the list of delicacies enjoyed by ancient Emperors, Kings, Pharoahs, and Medieval Royalty. Squab is a culinary tradition long ago established throughout Europe, the Far East, the Middle East and virtually every corner of the world. Often said to be the “meat of Kings”, Squab today retains its rightful position on the menus of finer dining establishments everywhere. Squabs are being enjoyed by an ever increasing number of discerning people who appreciate excellence in dining, whether at home or away.

“Squabs are characterized by broad, full breasts. Parent birds, or “breeders” mate for life and share the responsibilities of raising their young. True Squabs have never flown. Dressed for market 4 weeks after hatching, the meat of a Squab is distinctly unlike domestic poultry or wild game birds. Dark, moist and flavorful, each bird is prepared for market before it is old enough to fly.

“Squabs possess a characteristic which allows them to retain more moisture during the cooking process than other poultry – the result being a very versatile and easy bird to prepare for large or small groups of people. Squab is known to be one of the most easily digestible of all meats.”
