So, I’m staying in this “hotel” and they have a restaurant and I ordered dinner last night but they didn’t have any juices, which is what I usually drink – A.J. – Apple Juice.

That was the most addictive thing I have done since I stopped smoking cigarettes.
As soon as I finished it, I wanted another one.
I see how people can keep two liters of soda in the fridge.
It makes you want more.

But this time the urge to drink another one after I finished was stronger.
And if the soda machine was closer,

I never realized how much better juice is physically and mentally than soda.
I remember before I stopped drinking soda that there were certain foods I would eat and I could not stop without drinking soda after it. They seemed to CALL for soda. Especially chips. And hamburgers and fries. I’m so thankful I don’t eat any of those foods anymore.
It just doesn’t feel right eating a vegetarian meal and then drinking a soda.
I always have milk or juice or even iced chai or coffee.
It must be about three years since I had a soda. It’s been so long that I had to REALLY think to remember the last time I had one. But I’m a Goddess and I revel in the opportunity to exercise my mental powers.
Someone had left some at the masjid and my son and I found it. He was about eleven and had never had soda. So since it was flat, we drank some.
I had always made our drinks using honey to sweeten them and there is a huge difference.
I suppose I could make my own drinks now, being homeless, too. Except tea and Hot Chocolate. I never thought about it.
I usually carry honey in my purse, but I had left it in the PPI when I got locked out and haven’t replaced it since.
That should’ve told me I was slipping out of character

In New Orleans, one of the first things I noticed is the sweet way they refer to soda as a “cold drink”
I am trying to change the “cold drink” to include juice, water, milk, tea, coffee and lemonade. And that’s it. No energy drinks. No lean. And definitely no SODA.
Nothing has changed. The whiteman is still the devil and they still are killing us. Police brutality seems to be the way they’ve resigned themselves as being the best way to get away with it nowadays.

I LOVE MUSIC and was already paying a premium for another station, so I didn’t hesitate even after I found out you have to pay.
You get what you pay for, albeit, I can’t tell the difference between the regular plan and the Hi-Fi. (I’ve had both and I know I have good ears when it comes to music quality. That’s how I know those $250 Beats by Dre are some ish. I got some $5.00 headphones from Family Dollar that sound just as good. Sometimes the little cushion comes off, but the sound quality is SUPREME!!! And that’s the IMPORTANT PART!!! I think they are just trying to make more money. Everybody is not as noble as they should be. But they’re better than the rest of them.)
So that’s why I endorse Tidal as opposed to the others, and I’ve tried them all – Pandora (will play Parliament when I’m listening to Anita Baker radio ), iHeart (is cool if you want to listen to the radio, but I hate commercials so I don’t listen to them too long. It’s good if you travel and only have your computer but want to know what’s going on around town), Spotify (plays the same songs over and over and over and over. Feel me?), Soundcloud (is kinda confusing so I don’t mess with them too much even though I know it’s independent. Okay I just went to their website and it’s kinda like social media because the only thing that came up was a Brother who has a podcast or something everything else is from three years ago. TBH I only listen when somebody I know posts some music), Slacker [I’m thinking about getting Slacker again in addition to the TIDAL just on the strength of their radio stations. They play EXCELLENT songs I’ve never heard before] Tidal needs to improve on their radio stations so I won’t have to pay TWO premiums. Okay, you know I’m a “Right Now” Type of Sister. So, I’m listening to TIDAL’s radio and it’s pretty good. Good enough for me to not to have to pay two premiums anyway.)
Another reason I like it is because TIDAL is ARTIST OWNED and they get exclusives on new releases. Not to mention they PAY ARTISTS MORE THAN ANY OTHER STATION.
And I think that’s important, especially for new artists.
ANOTHER strong selling point for me is thatPRINCE gave TIDAL exclusive rights to his music before he died, and do you know his family is giving them a hard time about that?!! Taking TIDAL to court over Prince’s music and he chose them BEFORE HE DIED! AND YOU KNOW HOW EXCLUSIVE he was about his music!
I mean, you couldn’t find any of his music online when he was alive. YouTube, Internet Radio, iTunes, Napster, &c. He would have that stuff pulled down so quick! He was serious about his music.
Remember he put SLAVE on his face in protest of his record company and CHANGED HIS NAME (The Artist Formerly Known As Prince) to get out of his contract or something.
So, if PRINCE chose only TIDAL to feature his music online, I’m going with TIDAL.

Okay, now I can tell you about what’s been going on in my little life.
I had a safe night, which is the most important thing.
I got up early like I always do before everybody else wakes up, which will lessen the chances of me getting caught where I’m sleeping.
But I went to another HONEYCOMB HIDEOUT to pass the time until the day REALLY begins but it was a spot that I used to feel so secure. Until yesterday.
They know I’ve been posting up somewhere in the building and they narrowed it down to the floor and why did they post a Security Guard right at the entrance to THE HIDEOUT!!!
So, I couldn’t get out without getting caught!!!
That was the closest I’ve ever gotten to being caught right there.
I’ve never ever even felt threatened before yesterday.
BUT
My Amazing Zawji got me out, miraculously.
So, it was late by then

SO
I went back to that beautiful library
AND
Why did it seem like every devil in Louisiana had read my blog?
BECAUSE
They were all in there like they had never been there before

It was a bunch of old, white devils.
And I saw one old devil man, tap his wife so she would see me.
He looked like he didn’t care so much, but she looked star-struck.
Like he knew she would want to see me.
I left.
But not before Zawji told me to look for another cheap hotel
(under $40)
That was too close a call and he wanted me to lay low for awhile
So, I hear and obey
Even though my coffers are not full
And I found a nice hotel with a dorm too that’s even cheaper.

The hotel used to be an orphanage, which is kinda creepy and it’s in a really old facility.

It seems to cater to homeless people.
It’s cheap and I would probably be pissed if I came from out of town to stay in New Orleans and ended up here.
BUT if you’re used to sleeping under the freeway or in a HONEYCOMB HIDEOUT…

I was going to say, “when I start running out of money…” then Zawji reminded me that I lived here for three months last year without a dime to my name and ate good every day and not once did I have to sleep under the freeway or outside period.
I can’t.
If I couldn’t do it in Leimert, I know I can’t anywhere because Leimert is the safest place in the world to me. But it’s America and in the Black community, so there’s winos and pimps and hoes and stick-up kids and rapists and robbers and drugs and whatnot. And Virgil was even there! He has looked out for us since we started going regularly. Hakim was riding his bike and the chain kept coming off and Virgil fixed it. That’s how we met. We called him “The I-love-you-man” for years. Me and Hakim had nicknames for everybody. “Queen Crazy” “Garbage Mouth” “The Sexy Man” LOL Man I miss Leimert sometimes… Then I think about how it’s changed. And I’m reminded of why (regentrification) I’m not that anxious to return. Sorry Hakim. 😥 But I can’t take it. Anyway, I still couldn’t do it.
I can’t close my eyes unless I KNOW I’m safe. And that’s just not possible somewhere on the street. You’re too visible. I have to hide. Hence the HONEYCOMB HIDEOUTS.

But anyway, Zawji brought me to a wonderful place and I am so happy I wasn’t niggardly and obeyed
When I saw this I was speechless
I’ve seen one before but it was like in a window in a clothing store, but I actually sat at this one and was able to work the foot pedal. It felt so natural. It even had the instruction book and you change the needle the same way I do on my sewing machine, but threading was something else. I would really have to study and practice to figure that out. I looked in the drawers and it still had the implements. I saw some tools for repairing it and it had one of these that I didn’t know what it was until I was looking for a picture of the foot pedal which I learned is called a treadle.
The leather cord thingy looked exactly the same, so I googled it and found out it’s a belt that connects the upper wheel to the lower wheels that are operated by the treadle.
I hate when I don’t understand something.
I wanted to learn how to build one, just in case I’m somewhere with no electricity but look
The Upper Drive Shaft
The drive shaft splits its motive force in two, powering both a lower and upper drive shaft. The upper drive shaft travels along the upper length of the sewing machine, parallel with the work surface where clothing is sewn. It culminates in the form of a large crank connected to the needle bar. At the top of the machine’s head is placed a spool of thread. The thread is passed down the length of the needle bar into the slotted needle at its base. When the treadle is pushed, the needle bar rises and falls, passing the needle through the cloth into the underside of the machine, where it works in conjunction with the hook and bobbin, which are parts of the lower driveshaft assembly.
The Lower Drive Shaft
The lower drive shaft is connected to the upper drive shaft via pulley, and resides underneath the table surface of the sewing machine. It runs parallel to the surface, and ends in the form of a rotary crank shaft just beneath the point where the needle dips under the sewing table. This rotary crank shaft is connected to a hook and bobbin assembly. The hook and bobbin may best be described as circle of metal broken at a specific point with a shaped hook at the leading edge. When the needle drops down in range of the hook, it turns, hooking the thread running through the needle. It continues to turn a full circle, passing the thread in a circle to form a loop. The needle passes another length of thread through the loop to form a stitch, and the hook catches that next length of thread to repeat the process.
Okay, I kinda understand now. And Zawji thinks I could make one if I had the parts.
I’m gonna go take a GOOD look at that machine later.
Underneath it and see how the treadle is connected to the leather belt with that hook and see how it makes the wheels move or the crank and whatnot. I WISH I COULD TAKE IT APART.
Hakim used to do that all the time. And it would be SO challenging watching him put stuff back together.

That is how Benjamin Banneker learned how to make clocks.
If you didn’t know, he was the first man to build a clock in AMERICA.
He took apart a pocketwatch, which were the only type of clocks at that time in America, and learned how it worked.
Then he took his pocketknife and some wood and carved out all the parts to build a WALL CLOCK, which had never been seen by him nor anybody else in America.
People used to travel from all around to see it.
AND
It kept perfect time for FIFTY years – even after Brother Benjamin’s death.

I figured out why America puts homeless people in jail for trespassing.
They want to make you pay rent.
In Cuba, everyone gets food, clothes and shelter for free.
That’s why America hated Castro and killed Ghaddafi.
Any leader that is just to their people is hated by wicked America.
She sees them as a threat to her “freedom” to charge her citizens for these things
How can you charge someone for water and electricity?

I wanted to post a video about all of the wonderful things Our Half-Brother Fidel Castro did for his country. But I couldn’t find one to my liking.

Cuba used to be filled with corruption.
The leader was an American flunky and used his country to cater to the whims and wickedness of America while the Cuban people suffered under his rule.
Fidel Castro led a revolution overthrowing America’s pawn (Batista)
AND
Established a Socialist Government that supplied every citizen with housing, college education, medical care, food and clothing for free.
He did this by Nationalizing (taking control of and giving the profits back to the people) industries that had been owned by private American firms and government.
America hated him and vilified him because of this.
They called him a dictator and cut off all trade ties with Cuba, even though Cuba is only ninety miles away.
Castro did not cave but built his country using their own natural resources and

So, anyway on my way home from the Library I finally got to visit this place I have been interested in since I first moved to New Orleans.
There’s this Glassblowing Workshop on Magazine Street which is apparently known worldwide.
I remember seeing glassblowing as a child at The Farmer’s Market on Third, I believe.
I was only in the fifth grade, so I’m not sure.
But I used to love it.
I didn’t realize how much I’ve loved glass all my life until just now.
I mean let me Google how it’s made.
I know it’s made from sand,
AND
That is remarkable to me.
I think about how Allah Told Abraham to count the grains of sand on the beach to give him an idea of how numerous his seed would be on earth.
That’s us.
Black People in America.
Because the whole Bible and Holy Qur’an are about us.
My favorite glass are light bulbs.
They make an amazing sound when you throw them up the air and let them break on the ground.
I think they have to be blown out first, but I’m not sure because I’ve never broken a new one and am not stupid enough to waste one just for experimentation purposes.
That’s something the devil does.
ANYWAY
Glass-blowing is wonderful because it’s actually an artform and I’m really artsy, but I believe in FUNCTIONAL art.
I mean I dig paintings but that’s about it. But paintings are functional if properly placed. They decorate an otherwise bland wall. I hate statues. They are borderline idol-worship and creepy. If I had a nickel for everytime I’ve mistaken a statue for a person… I mean that is almost as creepy as seeing a woman with long dreadlocks and she turns around and has a mustache and beard! (It was really a man) I hate that. Brother’s PLEASE cut your hair. You look like a woman from a distance. And Sisters, you DO NOT cut your hair. Let’s cut out the confusion. Pun intended.
I like quilts and clay vessels and woodwork and ironwork that’s artistic.
I believe that’s the Muslim in me.

The other one sounds beautiful though and I would be on it but there are devils.

Okay, now I’ve heard of this Brother for several years
There’s a cafe in this “hotel” It’s called St. Vincent’s Guest House, so I think they know. LOL
I wasn’t going to give the name but Zawji wants me to. It’s hard to find out about places like this. I know because I was looking for one in L.A. and they keep them really hush-hush. I know there’s one in some spa but I couldn’t get any more information.
So, cheah.
Anyway, I had a pizza last night that was soooo good. It had spinach, onions, mushrooms, garlic (mmmm), cheese and sauce. The spinach was delicious but the garlic took it over the top.
And I finally decided to try this dessert I had never had the courage to pay for and try. I was thinking Baklava when I ordered it, but it was TIRAMISU and it was sooo good.
They say it’s Italian, just like they say all those Mediterranean foods are “Greek” but we know they come from those Muslim North African countries. I wish they would go somewhere with that.
Arabia is well-known for it’s coffee and Tiramisu is a coffee flavoured cake.

Once, I really did that on the Warner Brothers lot in Culver City. The first time I got away, but I went back later and the employee had locked the gate so I couldn’t get away. I was looking for Zawji. He’s an actor.
But being homeless in Louisiana and trying to evade the Po-Po’s all the time, I feel just like them (The Animaniacs). And when I get caught, they lock me up in jail, just like they get locked up in the tower.
Wait, I don’t think that’s the Warner Brothers lot in Culver City, maybe, but there’s no tower. I believe that’s in Burbank.
Oh yeah, now I remember! It’s Paramount.

So yesterday, I went to Tai Chi class and loved it as usual.
I met the piano teacher and I might start taking lessons next year.

Then, the main library is closed, so I Googled libraries that were near the class and I found one. It was far but it was the most beautiful building I have been in since I came out here. After visiting The Jonathan Club my standards of architectural beauty are so high and this library exceeded them.
I ended up getting very emotional because this was the first time I had seen children at a library (inside). White parents had brought their children. I’ve never seen Black parents bring their children to the library since I’ve been here.
I’m hoping maybe I just have been going to the wrong libraries or maybe the wrong time.
But it was very disheartening.
Mommies and Daddies take your children to the Library but only let them check out NON-FICTION books and educational DVDs.

I’m just thankful I survived another night without being caught trespassing
Brother Oscar was the first Blackman to produce a full-length feature film.
He was born in 1884 in Illinois.
Moved to Chicago when he was seventeen and worked several jobs including a Pullman Porter.
*Side note – As a Black historian, I’ve heard of the “Pullman Porters” on SEVERAL occasions. I just wrote about “Emperor Jones“, wherein the lead character goes off to be a Pullman Porter and what a joyous occasion it is. But I had no idea it was just a continuation of slavery. This pissed me off. I see it in New Orleans. One day I was in The French Quarter and I went in a bar to get some water and those full grown Black men were doing nothing but serving devils and looking at me crazy. I will be so glad to see the day when the Blackman figures out he can work for himself. He doesn’t have to be a servant any longer. Please Read MESSAGE TO THE BLACKMAN IN AMERICA and get a clue.
But back to Brother Oscar…
Sometime in the beginning of the twentieth century, he moved to South Dakota and started homesteading. I’m a country girl at heart and one day would like to own my own farm. So, you know I’ve heard of homesteading but wasn’t completely sure of what it is. So, I YT’d it and basically, I think it’s just farming but on a smaller level. Like just for your own family as opposed to producing one or more types of crops to sell to make money (cash crops). You just produce what you need for your family. At least that’s what it is now.
Back then, it was this. (This pissed me off too because they know they were supposed to give us our forty acres and mule upon emancipation but instead, they decide they’re going to give EVERYBODY the opportunity to own land and offer it for “low prices” which was still too much for the newly freed slaves. So we still end up with nothing! And have to suffer the humiliation of watching other people get the land that was designated for us! They STILL do that. Show me something that is Just For Black People! I’ll wait. Wasn’t NOBODY in this country slaves but Black People but we can’t get no type of retribution that’s just for us!!! See how they do us????!!!!!! I’m still waiting. Leave a comment. )
So anyway, on a personal sidenote, one day I would like to own a farmhouse with a lake or creek or some type of body of water in the backyard or somewhere, with a yellow cow and some laying hens, a cat or two or three or four or more and an apiary. So I can have an endless supply of milk and honey and C.R.E.A.M.!!!!
(Shout out to Mister Mef with the jail-issued toothbrush LOL) (I swear it seems like I watch this video at least once a month. I really love CREAM! 😉 )

Anyway, while Brother Oscar was homesteading he started writing. He self-published an autobiographical novel in 1913, entitled The Conquest, The Story of A Negro Pioneer which I think is gonna piss me off because he had an affair with a devil and he probably put it in the novel. He also wrote articles that were published in the Chicago Defender Newspaper.
In 1915, he moved to Sioux City, Iowa after a drought caused him to lose his land OR his wife ran off with his money and her father sold his land and kept the money while he was away. (I’ve heard both )
In 1917 he established his own publishing company: The Western Book Supply Company and wrote two more books: 1915’s The Forged Note and 1917’s sequel to The Conquest, The Homesteader. He also wrote four more books (The Wind From Nowhere, The Case Of Mrs. Wingate, The Story of Dorothy Stanfield and The Masquerade) in the forties, shortly before his death. I can’t find any links for these last four. Sorry. I looked.
In 1918, Brother Oscar was approached by The Lincoln Motion Picture Company – an all-Black film production company – that was the first to produce films portraying Black people in non-stereotypical but rather, wholesome and morally upright roles – who wanted to produce a film version of his book, The Homesteader but they would not agree to Brother Oscar’s terms that he be allowed to direct the film nor the amount of money allocated to produce the film.
So Brother Oscar sold stock in his NEW company The Micheaux Film & Book Company and produced the film himself.
It premiered in Chicago, a hub of Black life in America at the time, in February 1919.
Our Brother Oscar Micheaux went on to produce over forty films. I happened to watch two of them (finally 😉) today on YouTube. I wasn’t sure I was going to like the first one because it was entitled, “Lying Lips” and I thought the morality and integrity of the players would be questionable. But I really dug it!
I was not expecting it to be so heavily based on music, so that was a very pleasant surprise.
I also enjoyed the romance. They did it in such a way that was so sweet and not embarrassing like movies today.
The only thing I disagreed with was that leading lady gave her husband all her money and was willing to let him determine what to do with it.
Her original intention was to just help him out (take care of him) but after he got back on his feet, she STILL gave him her money. Which is just plain stupid. She should have quit her job, homemade (you know I coin terms 😉 ), let him take care of her and lived happily ever after.
The second one I watched was equally modest but with an added twist that made me feel like I could have written the script.
It echoed the themes that I repeat, ad nauseum, in this blog.
Anti-feminism, male/female roles, and the actual fact that when we are born we are born one-half of a soul and our other half is out there somewhere. We just have to be PATIENT and KEEP CHASTE and wait for Allah to make him/her manifest.
